About Us
The Shelter Island American Legion Mitchell Post #281 was founded on February 22, 1922. Our post is part of the American Legion organization, which was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. We are committed to supporting active-duty members of the U.S. Armed Forces, veterans and their families in need, and to serve the Shelter Island community in any capacity we can.
We have an excellent venue available to rent out for events. The venue includes a full service kitchen, dining area, fully equipped bar, as well as a two lane bowling alley. Visit our "Rentals" page for more information on how to have your next event at Post #281.
The Shelter Island American Legion is a 501(c)19 tax exempt charitable organization. All donations to us are tax deductible (donation receipt available upon request).

Eligibility
Recent Congressional legislation has expanded the war time eligibility period for membership in The American Legion.
The LEGION Act declares that the United States has been in a state of war since Dec. 7, 1941 so anyone who has served federal active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces since then is eligible for membership, so long as they're still serving honorably or were honorably discharged. Visit our "Membership" page for more information on how to join.

What We Do
Our initiatives focus on improving the lives of active duty service members, veterans and their families by providing them a safe haven to build comradery, and assisting them to obtain essential services, support, and resources. From healthcare initiatives to community outreach programs, we strive to make a positive impact on the lives of those who have served.
Veteran Health
Ensuring Well-Being
We focus on veterans' health by advocating for mental health support, helping them navigate Veteran Affairs benefits, and providing access to resources that enhance overall well-being. Our aim is to guarantee that veterans receive the care and support necessary for them to lead healthy and fulfilling lives.
Education
Empowering Through Knowledge
We are committed to the pursuit of higher education and service within the community. Each year we provide educational opportunities and scholarships to our local youth. We believe that our military veterans are living textbooks of American history. Their accounts of experiences while in uniform are preserved and shared with the local community through our various events.
